Oh baby! Newborn photography session at home with little Ellery
One thing I learned very early on being a mum and newborn photographer is that babies have their own agenda and the only way to win with them is to be incredibly patient. Even when I create a set of images of a peaceful, sleepy little newborn, the reality behind the scenes is that I spend a LOT more time shushing, swaying and swaddling than I do snapping to get to that happy place where bubba is fast asleep. Not so two-week-old Ellery, who started out incredibly interested in what I was doing, lifting her head and actually checking me out at one point before drifting off peacefully into a sound slumber that even produced a few dreamy smiles. I don’t know who was more in love at the end of our session, Ellery’s parents, or me!
I only shoot babies in their own homes. It’s a natural, candid approach that enables me to document all the real moments that are so precious to us as parents when we look back; learning how the HELL to swaddle a baby so it doesn’t wriggle free…how to feed…and most importantly, how to build a rapport with the first-born in many families…the resident fur-baby. 2-year-old rottie/shepherd cross, Lola, was so clearly in love with her little sister that, as always with dogs, I was quite blown away by the gentle care and connection.
As always, I ask parents if they have their own thoughts to share on the newborn photography experience Ellery’s mum, Caitlin, had this to say;
"Alexander and I were fortunate enough to be gifted a newborn at-home session from his mother for Christmas. We were thrilled to receive this gift as photographing Ellery at such a young age was so important to us, as she seems to be growing, changing and becoming more and more of her own person every day.
After talking via email, Eva came to our home which was by far the most convenient option, as it allowed us to continue with our usual routines, such as feeding and sleeping.
As two people who don’t particularly enjoy their photos being taken, Eva made us feel very comfortable and relaxed throughout the whole experience, while taking care of and photographing Ellery ever so gently.
The way Eva captured the candid and natural moments of our little family is amazing, and we are so in love with all of the photos she took - especially the ones including our fur baby!
We cannot thank Eva enough for not only capturing so many precious photos that we will cherish forever, and the efficiency of getting the photos to us, but also her patience, warmth and kindness on the day.
The whole experience was amazing, and we look forward to seeing Eva again in the future when it’s time for our family to grow.”
A huge thank you to Ellery and her mum and dad for letting me share this session with you. If you know someone in Hawke’s Bay expecting a newborn, feel free to share this blog with them, or if you’d like to find out more about newborn photography sessions with me, CLICK HERE.
