LITTLE LENNON - Newborn Photography Session At Home.

Never work with children and animals, they say. But where’s the fun in that? After being in business as a Hawke’s Bay photographer for almost 20 years, I love to find new ways to challenge myself and I also know that when you’re a couple with a fur baby and a first baby, nothing is more precious than a professional photograph of them together - what a forever treasure.

Perry the greyhound had only been a big brother for 2 weeks but it was astonishing to observe how caring and protective he already was of his little sister, Lennon.

At this newborn photography session, I shot in a very candid way to create a beautiful series of around 60 images that document a precious time in life that should be unforgettable but because of the sheer overwhelm and exhaustion, it’s often just a blur.

I spent a couple of hours with Chris and Gemma at their home tucked high in the hills of the Tukituki Valley in Hawke’s Bay. Newborn babies have their own schedule and agenda and I love shooting them in their home because we can then just roll with whatever happens in a way that’s relaxed for everyone. It also means I can document all those sweet little moments (such as two parents struggling together at the change table to figure out a nappy change) that are all part of the new journey of becoming parents.

I shoot everything in colour but often with newborn shoots I find stripping the colour away in the edit elevates the emotion of a moment more. And for me, it’s all about the emotion. Even though I’ve had two babies of my own and photographed too many to count, it still feels like a miracle to me every time I meet a tiny wee bubba and see how much love can exist already for someone so recently arrived on planet earth.

I’m so grateful to Chris and Gemma for allowing me to share their precious family memories. I hope these photos have warmed up your heart a little. There is so much online these days that’s depressing or negative, so I think it’s super important to put stuff into the digital world that reminds us that the simple miracle of life and love continues and it’s these things that matter most.
